Research & Development

Independent technical work developed from live landfill-gas, emissions, energy and engineering problems.

The aim is practical: make assumptions visible, connect evidence to decisions and identify where better modelling or field validation is required.

Current and forthcoming work

The papers and presentations below bring together Holden Environmental’s applied research, engineering models and conference work. Material is released here when conference and publication commitments allow.

AVAILABLE NOW

A Phased Water Balance Screening Model for Landfill Leachate Management Planning

A transparent monthly screening method for developing and testing landfill leachate management plans. The model links rainfall to changing areas of open waste, temporary cover and permanent cap, separates new leachate generation from inherited mobile storage, and tests recovery against the sustainable capacity of extraction, storage, treatment and disposal.

The worked application shows how filling and capping programmes can be compared, bottlenecks identified and management actions tied to measurable outcomes.

AVAILABLE NOW

Hydrogen Sulphide Emissions and Receptor Concentrations During Landfill Excavation

A transparent screening model that converts landfill-gas H₂S concentrations and excavation scenarios into mass source terms, concentration–distance profiles, screening concentrations at defined receptors and control-performance requirements.

The model separates diffuse face emissions, gas liberated during waste disturbance and short-duration localised releases.

COMING AFTER ISWA WORLD CONGRESS 2026

Time-Dependent Hydrogen Sulphide Behaviour in Landfill Gas

Examines how H₂S concentration can change through the operating and aftercare phases of a landfill, and why treatment design should consider sulphur mass loading and the expected duration of the duty—not simply the highest recorded concentration.

Status: Unpublished conference paper. Planned for release after the ISWA World Congress 2026.

COMING AFTER ISWA WORLD CONGRESS 2026

Landfill is Dead. Long Live Landfill.

An industry-facing presentation examining what modern landfill still needs to do, how the remaining infrastructure can be managed responsibly, and where landfill engineering fits within a circular and resource-constrained economy.

Status: ISWA World Congress 2026 presentation and follow-on publication.

COMING AFTER VENICE SYMPOSIUM 2026

From Declining Landfill Asset to Renewable Energy Hub

The potential role of ex-situ biomethanation in future landfill-gas management.

The paper considers using renewable hydrogen to convert the biogenic CO₂ fraction of landfill gas into additional methane, extending productive asset life while testing the engineering, operational and economic constraints.

Status: Venice Symposium 2026 paper. Planned for release after the Symposium.

Applied research, grounded in operating sites

The work is intended to support defensible engineering decisions—not to replace site investigation, detailed design or professional judgement. If one of these topics connects with a project or research programme, get in touch.
